In a brief tweet sent out early on Thursday morning, Formula One announced that the documentary series would return the following year.
This year’s Netflix series, which premiered in 2019, has been heralded as a huge success for F1’s new owners, Liberty Media because it has sparked a surge in interest among both young consumers and the American market in general.
It has also won multiple honors, including a BAFTA TV Craft Award and a Telly Award this year, which were both given in recognition of the show’s continued success.
As a result of the series’ fly-on-the-wall approach, with Netflix picking up storylines from each team throughout the course of the season, it has provided some unusual viewpoints on occurrences within Formula One teams.
The director of media rights for Formula 1, Ian Holmes, told Motorsport.com earlier this year that the series had opened the sport’s eyes to the potential audience increase that might be achieved through the series.
”What it really revealed to us was how many potential fans there might be out there, as well as how we might communicate with existing followers in a new way,” he said.
“What the Netflix series demonstrates to us is that there is a need for stuff that does not belong in a [normal] pre-race show,” says the author. However, there is a place for it, and people are genuinely intrigued by what it has to offer.
It has also demonstrated to us that what people are most interested in are individuals, personalities, rock stars, race drivers, and in some cases even select team principals, as opposed to teams or races as a whole.
“It’s the kind of personality-driven programming that they do.”
It has, I believe, successfully shed light on that, and it is in this area that the teams deserve enormous credit for their willingness to be transparent and cooperative, as well as their willingness to allow cameras and microphones into areas where they had previously been denied access.
Although no specific date has been set for the transmission of Series 4, it has historically been televised in the run-up to the start of the new television season. The Formula One season in 2022 is slated to begin in Bahrain in March of 2022 on the Netflix OTT platform.
